Senior Community Services Employment Program (SCSEP)
Easter Seals New Jersey’s “Senior Community Services Employment Program (SCSEP)” provides training and employment services to senior citizens with limited income who are age 55 and older and residents of Bergen, Hudson Middlesex and Union Counties. SCSEPs’ goal is to help seniors overcome the many challenges they may face on the road to becoming employable. These include work experience, income, education, transportation, housing, self-esteem, language, health, and stereotypes related to age. Eligible seniors wishing to re-enter the workforce are provided with on the job training at non-profit and government agencies, and paid minimum wages, subsidized by this federal grant. Easter Seals’ staff members then work with individuals to secure unsubsidized employment in the private sector. SCSEP is administered through a U.S. Department of Labor grant that has provided funds to national grantees for the past 40 years. According to the Department of Labor, the goal of the SCSEP program is to enhance employment opportunities for older Americans, and to promote older workers as a solution for businesses seeking a trained, qualified, and reliable workforce. Awarded the grant in 2003 as a sub-grantee, Easter Seals New Jersey currently contracts to provide services to 554 participants annually in four New Jersey counties. A short public-service announcement video titled "The Value of Older Workers" is available for viewing in English, Spanish and Closed Captioned for the hearing impaired.
