Easter Seals New Jersey Awarded Grant to Implement New "Worker Cooperative Program"
A worker cooperative program is the formation of a business entity in which the business is cooperatively owned by the workers. The objective is for Behavioral Health Services (BHS) consumers with psychiatric disabilities to create and maintain sustainable jobs and learn self-management while promoting local and community development. The goal is that at the end of a three year period, the co-op workers will have a fully-functioning business operation that can be sustained without the assistance of Easter Seals, exemplifying our mission to enable people with disabilities to obtain independence. The co-op, which will be a lawn care and maintenance operation in Monmouth County, will be comprised of four consumers under the guidance and training of an Easter Seals employment specialist and job coach. The staff will teach the four co-op participants overall management functions of creating and maintaining a successful business, including operation and servicing of the equipment, following proper safety procedures, and the skills necessary to provide adequate lawn care and maintenance such as mowing, trimming, edging, clean-ups, and snowblowing (in the winter). The grant provided includes funding for new lawn care equipment, transportation (truck with trailer), and a marketing budget. Easter Seals has long recognized the importance of meaningful employment in boosting an individual's self-esteem while taking a valuable role in their communities. With the implementation of the successful Millville greenhouse and now, the new lawn care and maintenance co-op, we continue to take a proactive role in identifying alternative opportunities for facilitating self-sufficiency of our consumers, improving their quality of life, and removing obstacles on their path to independence and full community inclusion. We are very excited to be a part of this unique and exciting endeavor and look forward to its success!
